
The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is a university in Baden-Wuerttemberg and National Laboratory of the Helmholtz Association. It originated as a merger of theUniversity of Karlsruhe (TH) (now the South Campus) with the Research CenterKarlsruhe (now North Campus). It is located in the center of Karlsruhe (South Campus)and on the district municipality Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen in the district of Karlsruhe(North Campus), forming a corporation under public law. Through the collaboration, synergies and generate research and teaching more closely linked, innovation andtechnology transfer are enhanced. The KIT is a member of TU9 Deutsch Institute of Technology was in the Excellence Initiative awarded the KIT in 2006 for its vision and has since addition of LMU and TU Munich’s three initials and now to nine in adultmembers of the group of “elite universities”.

History of the University of Karlsruhe
The founding of the Polytechnic of Karlsruhe was made by Grand Duke Louis of Baden on 7 October 1825 in Karlsruhe. It was inspired by Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. From 1832 the institution was affiliated to a State Forestry School. In 1865 the Polytechnic was elevated to Grand Duke Friedrich I of Technology (hence the nickname in 1902 introduced “Fridericiana” comes), but was continued until 1885, the name of Polytechnic University. 1886 Heinrich Hertz demonstrated the still existing and used Hertz Auditorium, the existence of electromagnetic waves. In 1899 the Technical University of Karlsruhe, the right to award doctorates. Four years later, with Magdalena Meub in Karlsruhe registered for the first time at a technical university in Germany a woman to a degree program.
